With fall already here and winter fast approaching, you need your HVAC system to run as smoothly and efficiently as possible to keep your home warm and comfortable. Should you need a technician to check out your unit, consider hiring one of our HVAC service professionals at Schmitt. With our services, we’ll make sure your indoor air quality problems are also addressed. Common problems include:

Mold buildup. The buildup of mold is one of the worst things that can happen in your home. Mold is toxic, and you’ll end up becoming sick if you’re in its presence for too long. We’ll properly address the buildup of excessive moisture in your home, which can come from the steam in your shower, leaks from your roof and condensation from low-quality windows. We also recommend that you turn on the kitchen exhaust fan whenever you cook and use your bathroom exhaust fan when showering to keep moisture from building up.

Alternating temperatures. With cold mornings and sunny afternoons, fall can be a time of varied temperatures. It will be difficult to conserve energy if you’re still relying on a manual thermostat. This is because you’ll need to switch back and forth between heating and cooling while remembering to reset the thermostat when you leave for the day. Your heating and air conditioning system can also become overworked by this, leading to poor efficiency and bad indoor air quality.

To resolve this, we usually recommend installing a smart thermostat to work with your system. This allows you to program a variety of temperatures throughout the day, and since  it’s Wi-Fi-enabled, the thermostat can check the weather forecast and adjust things accordingly. Our smart thermostat options can manage both heating and cooling as it switches back and forth smoothly between the two systems to keep you and your family comfortable.

Neglecting HVAC maintenance. Your HVAC unit won’t reach the end of its expected lifespan if it hasn’t been serviced and maintained regularly. It’s recommended that your system be serviced at least twice every year: once in the spring to prepare your unit for summer, and once in the fall to get ready for winter.

It’s also important to clean your ductwork and have malfunctioning parts repaired. Since you’re not going to be opening your windows as much, you’ll need to make sure your HVAC system can filter particles out of your home. This is why you should have your air filters replaced, to lower the amount of dust and particles in the air that can otherwise lower indoor air quality.
