Our History: From Humble Beginnings to Bay Area Leaders
Schmitt Heating Co., Inc. is a full-service heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) company which has served San Francisco and the immediate Bay Area for over 120 years.
Now owned and operated by Greg Schmitt, great- great-grandson of the original founder, this fifth-generation company continues to provide the same quality of service we have been known for in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1901.
Founded in 1876 in Colorado Springs by Jacob Schmitt, working with his son, George W. Schmitt, the company moved the business by train to Oakland, California in 1901, initially operating out of the very boxcars used to move. Although the public was skeptical due to the temperate California weather, the Schmitt family sold many furnaces. Meanwhile, George W.’s son, George P. Schmitt., had started working in the business at the age of 14. In 1921 George P. moved the business from Oakland to San Francisco, originally located on Ocean Avenue and eventually moving in 1932 to 3281 Mission Street. George P. was a manufacturer of DUPLEX furnaces which came to be known for their “soothing heat.
By 1921, George P. Schmitt, who joined the business at age 14, moved operations to San Francisco, first on Ocean Avenue and later to 3281 Mission Street in 1932. George P. became renowned for manufacturing the DUPLEX furnace, celebrated for its “soothing heat.”
In 1966, George A. Schmitt relocated the company to the Richmond District, further cementing our legacy in the Bay Area. Under the leadership of Greg Schmitt since 1994, we have combined tradition with cutting-edge technology to deliver advanced HVAC and sheet metal solutions.
