4 Questions to Ask About Your HVAC Replacement Quote

If you’re replacing your HVAC system, don’t just settle for the first or lowest quote that comes your way. In addition, don’t be shy about asking your prospective contractor questions about their quote or estimate. In today’s post, local HVAC service contractor Schmitt shares key questions you should ask a prospective HVAC contractor when reviewing their quote.

What brands do you offer? If you’ve been looking up and comparing HVAC brands, you may already have one or more preferred brands in mind. Which brands an HVAC contractor offers can help you narrow down your options. Work with authorized dealers to make sure you get the best units and warranty coverage.

Will you install matching heating and air conditioning systems? An HVAC system is “matched” when the heating and cooling coils in each system are of the same condition or efficiency rating at the time of installation. This is an important question to ask if, for example, you’re only replacing your heating system. However, it’s important to first have both systems inspected by an HVAC technician before making a decision. Matching systems might not even be necessary with variables like differences in your home’s heating and cooling requirements.

What will the warranty cover? The most basic HVAC warranty coverage should at least provide coverage for defective components or units. When comparing warranty coverage, find out which contractor offers the most in terms of coverage for labor costs, installation, maintenance and consumables like air filters. In addition, ask the prospective contractor about who’s responsible for warranty registration.

Is cleanup in the contract? Someone will have to haul your old HVAC system away after replacement. Some contractors offer disposal as part of the contract, while for others it’s an add-on. In addition to the convenience, HVAC contractors will ensure that the old HVAC system is properly disposed of — which is important if your old HVAC system used banned refrigerants like Freon (R-22 or HCFC-22).
